Uber’s first Beacon was released in 2016 and has recently been updated to it’s 2.0 version. Uber’s Beacon is a device that helps you spot your driver easily.

Uber Beacon 2.0 is a hardware device that helps both rider and driver find each other easier through satellite and sensor technologies. The device pairs with the driver’s phone through bluetooth and is designed to be attached to a car’s dashboard. The Beacon’s digital display will glow a specific color that a rider chooses in the app to help them find the right car in crowded situations. It also reminds riders to wear their seat belt, close car doors gently, and exit curbside.

The Beacon 2.0 connects to the car’s power with the use of a USB cable, and has a magnetic base allowing it to be attached to the car’s dashboard. The device also collects GNSS, IMU and barometer data from the driver’s phone to better improve both driver and rider experience, and increase accuracy of pick up and drop off locations.

In early november a hand picked number of Uber drivers will begin to receive the Beacon 2.0. Uber is working to give all customers a better experience.
